​​​​On October 14, 2025, the Texas A&M Forest Service approved $164 million in awards for 558 fire trucks and 321 slip-on units to be given to Texas volunteer fire departments through the Rural Fire Department Assistance Program.  Powell Town volunteers were excited to learn that Powell Town VFD had been awarded $300,000 to be used for the acquisition of a tanker/tender and an additional $45,000 grant to be used for the purchase of a new slip-on unit.  

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Powell Town VFD.  Powell Town’s application, along with many other rural fire departments’ applications, had been in a pending status for years.  The Rural Fire Department Assistance Program has been traditionally underfunded with requests from fire departments far outnumbering the amount of money the Texas Legislature sets aside annually to fund the program.   This “catch up” funding by the 89th Texas legislature is a historic one-time event not expected to be repeated.

Taking advantage of this opportunity requires Powell Town pay 5% of the purchase price as a cost-share (a condition of the grants made to volunteer fire departments by the Texas A&M Forest Service.)   After shopping vendor offerings, the most competitive truck meeting program requirements and community needs will cost Powell Town $268,000.  This means Powell Town will need around $15,667 for its share of the costs to acquire both the new truck and skid.  

While all the volunteers are grateful for each, and every donation made during the recent annual fund raising and honorary membership drive, only a small portion of the money raised can be used for the cost share payment.  Most of the funds raised must be used to pay for normal operating expenses (equipment maintenance and fuel).  That means additional fundraising will be necessary to cover the cost share payment.
